1979 Birth Year Nebbiolo
at the home of the Fine Wine Geek in Delmar, NY (6/27/2021)
My friend Mikhail stopped by for dinner on his way home from the Adirondacks.
Knowing that my local friend Jared was also born in 1979, I invited Jared and his lovely wife Amanda to join us.
Since I was doing much of the prep, I neglected to take photos of the food.
Mikhail took a much better shot of the white wine, so I've borrowed his.

2013 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Tradition - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
With assorted apetizers.
[Pop and pour around 5:30pm.] Golden color. Rich and complex in the mouth. Very flavorful. Goes well with mixed apps.

1979 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
With lamb chops from a local farm.
[Double decanted for a half hour at 2:30pm.]
Cork is saturated, but the wine smells like it should with dark ripe fruit and forest floor.
Drunk around 7pm. Classic Rabaja with lots of dark fruit and mulch. Excellent length.
Impressive given that it's not considered a great vintage. Probably at its peak now.

1979 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Cascina Francia - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Double decanted for a half hour at 1pm.]
With a cheese course of Langhe Robiola, Taleggio D.O.P., Buffalo milk Taleggio, and Compté.
Drunk around 8pm. Nose of licorice and dark red fruits. Rich and full in the mouth still with some tannin.
Continues to open up. By 11pm, it has softened with a long and juicy finish. Nose of roses and coffee.
A wow wine in a so-so vintage. Still quite youthful. I wish I had a few more of these! (95 points)

I was very happy how all three wines showed. I only wish I had more of that 1979 Conterno.
